Restaurants in Mumbai

Mumbai is a food lover's haven, boasting the very best of high class restaurants and, at the same time, the largest number of roadside stalls in the country! The paradoxical point is that the carts often manage to serve the tastiest food! Tourists, please take note, however, that this quick-fix snack option is not for every stomach. The variety of food available in Mumbai is more varied than anywhere else in India. From on-the-spot snacks, Indianised-Chinese meals and fast-food; to the very elite boutique restaurants serving International choices from ethnic food to five-star cuisine, the choice is simply enormous.

The adventurous can try the famous Vada Pav and signature Pav Bhaji from a road-side stall, Masala Dosa at an Udupi joint, Ice Golas and Sev Puri from Juhu Beach, Masala Chai from any happy local tea vendor, Farsan, Dryfruits, Halwa and Barfi from sweet shops.

Our Mumbai restaurant guide below will tell you where and what to eat when in Mumbai. So after shopping for some bargains and souvenirs, enjoy a great meal at one of Mumbai's roadside stalls or restaurants. We also have general information for where and what to eat in India.

Food & Cuisine in Mumbai

The food choices in Mumbai are as diverse as its population, regardless of how much money you want to spend. At Bade Miyan, an open air restaurant in Colaba, you will see some of the city’s richest residents alongside taxi drivers. Restaurants in Muhammad Ali Road attract food lovers in large numbers, despite their modest décors. If you have money to spare, then head to Indigo or Olive, two of the city’s designer restobars that have an enviable reputation for fine dining. Mumbai offers something for everyone with its diverse and authentic cuisine at restaurants like Olympia, Mela, New York, Paradise, Cream Centre, Khyber, Parabola, Crepe Station and many more.

Street Stalls

Mumbai’s famous street food is best sampled on its beaches, Chowpatty in south Mumbai and Juhu Beach in the western suburbs, where innumerable fast food sellers create Mumbai’s signature dish Pav Bhaji. The beaches are also a great place to try out Kulfi (an Indian version of ice cream) with falooda. Besides the beaches, this hand-made speciality is also available at other locations in the city such as Big Byte, Kulfi Centre and Bachelors Juice House.

Bars and Clubs

Mumbai has a wide variety of bars, from dingy and small to chic and fashionable. Most discos and clubs are clustered in two areas – in the western suburbs of Juhu and Bandra, which are favoured by a younger clientele; and in the business district in south Mumbai that typically has more of a business oriented clientele as well as the rich and famous industrialist crowd. Nightspots such as Red Light, Athena, The Ghetto, Fire and Ice and ONYX are some of the best known and happening nightclubs in town. For a relaxing atmosphere and affordable prices, Razzberry Rhinoceros, Hawaiian Shack, Club IX and On Toes are popular choices.

Besides its club scene, Mumbai has a huge selection of lounge bars and hookah cafés. Mocha in Bandra, Basuba in Colaba and Mikanos, Churchgate and Marouch in Worli are a few of the popular ones. Colaba Causeway’s Leopold Bar & Restaurant and Café Mondegar are two must visit spots for an authentic Mumbai experience. Both cafés are always busy with tourists and beer drinkers, no matter what time of the day it might be. For a different kind of experience, try Not Just Jazz By The Bay, for a karaoke and jazz evening, or Suzie Wong, which is located in the middle of the ocean.
